Research Abstract |
1.Inert mineral fines play a role of bridging the hydration products of cement and, thus, increase the compressive strength of hardened cement paste. The increase in strength due to true bridging is 0 to 5 N/mm^2, although the value changes depending on the cement content or water-cement ratio and test ages. 2.When a part of cement in base mortar is replaced with the same volume of inert fines as the replaced cement, the ratio of the compressive strength of mortar containing the inert fines to that of base mortar is hardly influenced by test ages, temperatures, or the fineness of fines, although it decreases as the volume ratio of water to powder materials increases. 3.The compressive strength ratio of two mortars, one containing a test fine and the other a inert mineral fine at a fixed volume rate to cement, could be a good index for evaluating the activity of mineral admixtures or their contribution to the strength development of concrete. 4.Active mineral fines can effectively develop their binding capability in the range where water-cement ratio on mass basis is larger than 0.40. 5.The reactivity of fly ash is quite sensitive to temperature.
