Research Abstract |
In this study, we tried to measure the regional temperatures noninvasively in normal resting adult volunteers using 'H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (^1H-MRS) at 3 T. The temperature was estimated by using the magnetic resonance chemical shift of water protons relative to protons of metabolites. 1. BRAIN TEMPERATURE Repeatedly measured regional brain temperature in one male (48 years old) indicated that the brain temperature could be measured using ^1H MRS with an error range of less than 0.2 Among 36 volunteers (19 -65 years old), values of the temperature at deep white matter near the left cingulate gyms and frontal lobe in 18 males were 37.4±0.4 and 37.0±0.6 (mean±SD significantly different, paired t-test, P<0.05), and those in 18 females were 37.4±0.4 and 37.4±0.6℃ (not significantly different). The temperature at the frontal lobe in the males was significantly lower than that in the females (P <0.05). Moreover, the temperature at the deep white matter in the males, but not in the females, significantly correlated with tympanic temperature (r = 0.809, P <0.001). 2. TEMPERATURE OF LOWER LEG MUSCLES The values of temperature in gastrocnemius (GAS; shell region) and soleus muscles (SOL; core region) at ambient temperature (21 -25 were estimated to be 35.5±1.5 and 37.4±1.6 (mean±SD), respectively (significantly different; P <0.01). Alternation of the surface temperature of the lower leg from 40 to 10 significantly changed the temperature in GAS (P <0.0001) from 38.1±1.2 to 28.0±3.8 However, the temperature in SOL was not significantly affected by this maneuver. 1 We could measure the temperatures at deep regions noninvasively using H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (^1H-MRS) under physiological conditions.
