Research Abstract |
We have performed health management in a manufacturing enterprise in H prefecture and carried out a survey of workplace stress and mental health at 2-year intervals. In the survey in fiscal 1997,of all 1,363 workers, 1,246(84.6%) responded to the questionnaire. Of the respondents, 1,036(83.1%) could be followed up by the survey after 2 years (fiscal 1999). The questionnaire on subjective workplace stress consists of 14 items based on Uehata's. For each item, one of "always", "sometimes", and "do not feel" is selected. As for an occurrence of stress related diseases, medical visits were asked within a year before the survey. Peptic ulcer, lower back pain, neck-shoulder-arm syndrome, insomnia were selected as stress related diseases because their prevalence was high in the survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed using the occurrence of the diseases in fiscal 1999 as a dependent variable and subjective workplace stress, sex, age, alcohol usage, smoking and a kind of wo

rk in fiscal 1997 as explanatory variables. P<0.05 was regarded as significant. As a result of multiple logistic regression analysis for peptic ulcer, the odds ratios (95% CI) of female to male, and age per a year, work in the factory to research & development/ofiice work, and "always" and "sometimes" to "do not feel" for too little work were 0.28(0.10-0.81),1.05(1.02-1.09),2.38(1.21-4.69), 2.00(1.02-3.94), respectively. For lower back pain, the odds ratios (95% CI) of work in the factory to research & development/office work, and "always" and "sometimes" to "do not feel" for too little work were 3.94(1.69-9.15), 2.29(1.12-4.68), respectively. For neck-shoulder-arm syndrome, the odds ratios (95% CI) of work in the factory to research & development/office work, and "always" and "sometimes" to "do not feel" for feel pressed for time were 2.18(1.08-4.39) and 2.47(0.94-6.50), respectively. For insomnia, the odds ratio (95% CI) of "always" and "sometimes" to "do not feel" for work hours too long was 2.56(1.00-6.51). Less
