Research Abstract |
Fatty liver has been a well-established reversible complication related to obesity. Recently, however, it was revealed to be a risk factor for developing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), a novel type of life-style related disease. In addition, a considerable proportion of patients suffering from this new category of chronic liver disease was revealed to develop liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. NASH could be a serious social problem in Japan since 20 to 30 percent of adults are suffering from fatty liver today. For this reason, we heed to deal with this life-style related disease. Very little facts are known about this novel disease and we need appropriate animal models of this disease to develop efficient therapeutic strategy. Therefore, we developed a model strain in mice of NASH and characterized its genetic predisposition in this study.
