In the year 2002 period, we completed 3-year testing of 59 participants from the year 1999 period. We investigated the relationship between MRI observations and results from first-round cognitive testing of these subjects and second-round cognitive testing 3 years later. Cognitive testing results declined after 3 years in conjunction with the extent of deterioration in indices of : mild cortical atrophy, cerebellar atrophy, T2 of basal ganglia (number of strong signals in T2 image on MRL), parietal lobe atrophy, corpus callosum atrophy, T2 of the pans, PVH, temporal lobe atrophy, T2 of the temporal lobe, and lateral ventricle enlargement.
By late December in the 2003 period, we had carried out 3-year, second-round testing in a total 150 subjects. In the current round, to the Benton Visual Retention Test we added Enhanced Cued Recall (ECR) and Symbol Digit Substitution, and with regard to MRI, we carried out visual assessment of horizontal slices. We have also decided to add assessment of other coronary slice images.
In cases in which MRI demonstrated any of: cortical atrophy, temporal lobe atrophy, lateral ventricle enlargement, or enlargement of the sylvian fissure, we observed a relationship to deterioration in cognitive testing; additionally, the presence of T2HSI suggested an impetus to deterioration of brain function, depending on the site.
Consequently, it is possible to hypothesize changes in the brain function of healthy elderly adults based on MRI observations, and by compiling a second round of screening for all cases and a third round of screening after 6 years, it will be possible to perceive changes not only in brain function, but also in the daily activity of healthy elderly adults.
