Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to establish a novel handy tongue function diagnosis based on age-specific standard value of maximum voluntary tongue pressure (MVTP). After assembling utility system with disposable intra-oral probe and portable devices that enables us to measure tongue pressure in diversified environments supposed in such as epidemiologic study situation, we measured MVTP of 1,229 volunteers (age range : number of subjects 18-39 yr : 311, 40-59 yr : 99, 60-79 yr : 429, 80 yr and over : 390) under the permission of Hiroshima University School of Dentistry Ethical Committee. Besides MVTP measurement, subjects were inspected and interviewed about oral status and chewing/swallowing function including Repetitive Saliva Swallowing Test (RSST) For subjects w ho had no signs and symptoms of swallowing dysfunction, MVTP's mean±S.D. for each age brackets were as follows 18-39 yr : 42±11 kPa, 40-59 yr : 39±12 kPa, 60.79 yr : 32±11 kPa, 80 yr and over : 23±11 kPa. There was negative correlation between age and MV'I'P. For subjects over GO years of age, those who could swallow 3 and more times in RSST could exert stronger MVTP (29 ± 12 kPa) than those who could swallow less than 3 times could (21±12 kPa) In conclusion, based on age specific standard value acquired from the largest sample ever in this field of study, although from the limited aspect, we could diagnose some quantitative aspects of tongue function concerning swallowing function conveniently and safely
