| Research Abstract |
Bhutan has less studies on its forest/environment policy, compared to other Himalayas, e.g.Nepal.Thus, this research had mainly concentrated on basic works and analysis to compile available information on Bhutan' s development/environment policy.
Firstly, for understanding historical geographical situation in very macro-scale, historical process of economic development of Bhutan and its adjacent region were studied from materials recorded by British Indian government. Special attention was paid to the Nepalis who migrated to theregion from mid 19th century.A GIS system was constructed, by which statistical information on each state/district could be visualized on maps.
Secondly, an information database on Bhutan' s environmental policy was constructed, based on information available in back-issues of "KUENSEL" and "Proceedings and Resolutions of the National Assembly"
Thirdly, a GIS system is also under construction, which contains recently available statistical data on land use and agricultural census of Bhutan.
According to results of the above-mentioned works, it is clear that the role of the Nepalis, who migrated to the region from mid 19th century, is significant. And, analysis of their role is necessary for constructing the human geoecological history of eastern Himalaya. Government environment policies which relate to population. land, forest. etc., are also important background which partly caused a present issue of. Bhutanese Nepalese refugees to India and Nepal.
