Research Abstract |
Since Chinese government adopted Open and Reform Policy in the end of 1978, large numbers of new Chinese migrants have gone to the various countries in the world from mainland China. The purpose of this study was to discuss globalization of Chinese and changes of ethnic Chinese communities in the world. The investigator has collected various books, articles, and statistical data on ethnic Chinese and Chinatowns. He carried out field researches in Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Saitama, etc. and in China, USA, Holland, Thailand etc. In Japan, a great many Chinese students began to come to study in Japanese language schools and universities in Tokyo in the middle of 1980's. At the start these Chinese newcomers tent to live in cheap apartments around the central area of Tokyo. Recently their residential areas have spread in suburban areas of Tokyo Metropolitan Area. From the global point of view, it seems to be the most remarkable characteristic that new Chinatowns have developed in the suburbs of metropolises as newcomers from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and so on, increased.
