Research Abstract |
I planed two studies in order to grasp the factors of the comfortable and healthy life for the elderly. 1. The survey on the actual conditions of daily physical activity on the elderly This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of physical functions involved in the daily activities of elderly people. I measured the volume of activity undertaken by elderly people in order to investigate how they spend their daily lives and how much energy they utilize on daily activities. I also evaluated the factors related to increased volume of activity. In addition, I conducted a similar study of middle-aged persons, for comparison with the elderly, in order to understand activity characteristics particular to the elderly. The results are as follw ; This study demonstrates that the center of activity for elderly people is indoors, and that cooking is a major factor among all housework activities that functions toward increasing the total volume of activity. In the future, it will be necessary to improve the environment in which elderly people are able to cook safely, since cooking was shown to be the daily activity that helps maintain physical functions. 2.The survey on the physical influence of the cooking work and environment on the elderly This study focused on kitchen work, which is one of the IADL indicators and the most influential to the amount of activities in daily life of all kinds of housework. I surveyed the actual conditions of kitchen works done by the elderly as a basic research for grasping their physical functioning and also collected data of the middle-aged to compare to the elderly aimed at making their features more clear. The results are as follw ; As for the elderly, the more frequently they shifted their weight, the higher their heart rate increased. While cooking, the characteristic figures of the elderly were that in which they did the works with the knees extended. And the elderly often did kitchen works by holding something to support the body.
