Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Measurements of root porosity suggested that formation of aerenchyma is more rapid under P deficiency and that this is particularly strong for the genotype with higher tolerance to P deficiency. These results were confirmed using more detailed cytological examinations in combination with image analysis tools. The tolerant genotype DJ had a higher proportion of aerenchymatic tissue compared to Nerica4 and this further increased under P deficient conditions. Aerenchyma formation is thus one of the candidate mechanisms that may explain why DJ is generally performing better under low-input conditions, and specifically why it is capable of utilizing P more efficiently in biomass accumulation when P is the limiting factor.
Analysis of gene expression patterns for three gene families known to be involved in aerenchyma formation produced suggestive rather than conclusive data. It identified a few candidate genes differentially expressed in contrasting genotypes. Further studies are needed to follow up on this. A manuscript describing his work on aerenchyma is nearing completion and will be submitted for review soon.
Furthermore, his assistance with the bioinformatics analysis of the RNA-Seq dataset was instrumental in completing the study of Dr. Nanda. This work is now under review.
