Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the fiscal year 2016, Wilfred Wan worked on finalizing the research project. He conducted field work on two research trips in Japan. In Fukushima, Wan spoke to prefectural officials and leaders of non-governmental organizations, discussing lessons learned from the March 2011 disaster, and examining the recovery effort to date. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he attended the peace memorial ceremonies and interviewed representatives from local universities and government. He gained a greater understanding of how these individuals perceive the major challenges in the nuclear issue, and their ideas for solutions. From this work, and also from his desk-based research and use of primary and secondary sources, Wan moved to complete his book manuscript about regional approaches to nuclear challenges. This included chapters of East Asia, the Middle East, and South America. He argues that the globalized economy has made regions in general more integrated, and conducive to security cooperation. However, the process of addressing nuclear challenges regionally will be difficult - because of historical animosity, competition, and limited resources. States (including those in East Asia) will have to build upon existing nuclear safety and security cooperation at the technical level, and in some cases secure extra-regional guidance, in order to address the threat posed by nuclear weapons. Overall, due to his research, he was able to secure a publisher for this research project, and submitted a draft for publication by the end of this fiscal year.
