津波堆積物高精度解析による南海トラフ巨大津波波源の時空間分布評価

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

過去数千年間に別府湾で発生したプレート内地震に伴う津波の履歴を解明するため，南岸に位置する大圓寺湿地（大分県大分市）と北岸に位置する軒ノ井低地（大分県速見郡日出町）において古津波堆積物調査を行った．掘削された堆積物コアから古津波堆積物層を識別するため，堆積相観察に加えて，粒度分析，地球化学分析，珪藻分析を行った．さらに，堆積物コアに認められた古津波堆積物層の形成年代を放射性炭素年代測定により推定し，既存の活断層研究や海底掘削研究によって得られているイベント年代と比較した．
大圓寺湿地の有機質泥層中に認められた4枚の砂層と軒ノ井低地の有機質泥層中に認められた層厚約10 cmの砂層は，上下の泥層と明瞭な地層境界で区切られており，突発的に形成されたイベント堆積物であると考えられる．また，砂層の地球化学的特徴も上下の有機質泥層と大きく異なっていた．このことも，砂層を構成する粒子が異なる堆積環境から供給されたことを示唆している．さらに，泥層では淡水－汽水生種の珪藻のみが観察されたのに対して，砂層では汽水－海生種の珪藻が特徴的に産出していることから，砂層を構成する粒子がより高塩分環境から供給されたと推定される．以上から，これらの砂層は過去の津波遡上により形成された可能性が極めて高いと言える．本研究で得られた5回イベント発生年代に1596年慶長豊後地震を加えると，それらの再来間隔は850～1500年程度であると推定される．本研究は，プレート内地震に伴う古津波堆積物を発見した初めての事例であり，これまでの海域における活断層研究から推定されていた断層の活動年代より精度の良いイベント発生年代を推定することができた．
