Research Abstract |
Coordination Group G has two distinct directions: a time-honored tradition very strongly oriented towards Sinology catalog studies including fields that deal with related elements such as woodblock -print books and bibliographies, and fields related to the digitalization of books (Chinese classics), or rather issues related to the architecture of Chinese classics databases. This apparent underlying contradiction posed challenges for Coordination Group G. In other words, in preparation for the final goal of studying East Asian publishing culture", Group G was required to gain deeper knowledge in various fields and search for and propose resolutions to contradictions. Achieving this, the Nov. 2003 Tokyo meeting, the Dec. 2003 Kyusyu meeting jointly sponsored by Group G, and the Dec. 2004 Osaka Seminar were held. At the Tokyo meeting, in the field of book cataloging, clarifications and policies were suggested for non-established elements in catalog classifications, while concrete issues in

volved in Chinese classics database architecture we are considered in the information field. At the Kyusyu meeting, reports were given regarding the publication of information and studies on a large amount of data concerning Japan, both domestically and abroad. At the Osaka meeting issues with the digitalization of Chinese classics, text processing, electronic publishing and ontology were raised, knowledge was deepened regarding the current status of and problems with the information fields, the evolution of information equipment, databases, and various other fields, and the status of information in a wide range of areas was ascertained. However, throughout these research meetings, the level of specialization involved in the book cataloging fields and information fields was extremely deep, and the difficulties of temporary collaboration between the two was again recognized. Not to say that the two fields are mutually exclusive, but rather that it was acknowledged that there is ample opportunity for finding mutually complimentary system for the two fields, although each are based on their respective specializations.
