Research Abstract |
This research project was conducted by ten linguists who work on languages of the North Pacific rim. One of the aims of the project was to improve the level of the description of each language. It also aimed at contribution to linguistic typology by sharing the data and analyses. The result of the three-year project can be summarized as follows. 1.Research meetings Every July we had a research meeting, in which we discussed many topics based on the reports by the project members and other participants. The meetings were open to general audience including graduate students. We enjoyed a fruitful discussion by exchanging information and opinions for various topics of description and typology on northern languages. 2.Field researches Most of the members conducted a field research annually, by which each member collected linguistic materials to enlarge his/her own data and to contribute to the typological study. Each investigator keeps contacts not only with speakers but also with local researchers and educational institutions to maintain a cooperative relation and to discuss the matter of his/her contribution to the local community. 3.Contribution to symposiums on endangered languages Most of the members participated in major national symposiums on endangered languages : a symposium sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Tokyo, November 2004) and two symposiums held by the Linguistic Society of Japan (Tokyo, January 2004 and February 2005). Our project members played an important role in giving lectures and poster presentations, as well as in the planning and management of each symposium. 4.Publication of result We published annually a collection of papers including the results of our project : Languages of the North Pacific Rim, volumes 11-13 (T.Tsumagari ed., Graduate School of Letters, Hokkaido University, 2004-2006). Three more volumes of collected text material were published by the grant of this project.
