Research Abstract |
The Historiographical Institute has been collecting a large quantity of microfilm reproductions of historical source materials written in European languages concerning early modern Japan. The institute has published detailed inventories covering a good portion of them. In this project we review the collection from a text critical and structural view point. We tried to make a descriptive catalogue for some part which were not yet catalogued and add some inventorial information to the existing ones. We also collected some new reproductions. 1.Archives on monastic orders : (1)We are making a descriptive catalogue of Jesuit letters relating to the mission in Japan in the codex "Jesuitas na Asia" preserved in Biblioteca Publica da Ajuda, Lisboa. (2)One of the members visited Archivo Franciscano Ibero-Americano, Madrid and listed the documents about the Franciscan in Japan. 2.Archives on Dutch East India Company (VOC) : (1)We are making a database of the documents contained in "Batavia's Uitgaand Brielboek 1621-1792', now about 42500 records. Part of it can be accessed via the institute's website (http://www.hi.u-tokyo.ac.ip/tokushu/DacEnglish/index. html). (2)We rearranged the list of the "Dagregisters gehouden door opperhoofden van de Nederlandse factory in Japan". In this list we can see variant texts in different archival groups. (3)We received new reproductions of the archives of the Huydecoper family, preserved in the national archives in Utrecht, which included some documents relating to Japan. 3.Other Dutch Archives : We gathered information about the documents produced by the institutions replacing VOC, such as Comite Oost-Indische Handel en Bezittingen, Ministerie van Kolonien and received a few reproductions. One of our members also visited Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia and investigated the documents of "Algemeene Secretarie". 4.British East India Company(EIC) : We received some microfilm reproductions from the documents of the EIC preserved in the British Library.
