| Research Abstract |
The aim of this research was to promote study on history (such as to generate new interpretation and analysis of historical materials) by means of developing the interactive retrieval system designed for complete English and Japanese texts, focusing on the document structure and descriptive methods of Japanese classical texts. The texts we used are Japanese Kojiki, Nihon shoki, Engi shiki, Izumo fudoki and so on. We further digitized 25 volumes of Japanese classical texts to conduct interactive search within and across these English/Japanese texts and to browse and retrieve the texts. We marked the logic structure and XML Schema of the classical texts, combined them with these texts using XML, saved them in various document files in Open Text, and developed the interface for conducting speedy and effective search from the web browser. 1.We entered the target Japanese classical texts using OCR.
Digitization of the text using word recognition function : We saved the Japanese texts of the following titles -- Kojiki, Nihon shoki, Shoku nihongi, Engi shiki, Gukansho, Taiheiki, Okagami, Jinno shotoki and Izumo fudoki -- together with their English translations and the image files of the Japanese originals. With adding simplified tags, we created the interactive retrieval system covering complete English and Japanese texts.
2.We developed search methods focusing on the document structure and the methods used for historical texts.
3.For the following texts -- Kojiki, Nihon shoki, Shoku nihongi, Jinno shotoki, Izumo fudoki, Engi shiki - we developed the retrieval methods combining the search function of complete documents by adding XML tags. XML tags enable us to conduct an effective and efficient search from their document structure and from their inter-connection.
4.We were able to associate geographic information that is important for text information and classical and historical materials. By creating the data on the shrines registered in Engi shiki (2,861 shrines), we developed the database covering the names of domain, county, place, information of the location (latitude, longitude), and connected with GIS.
