Research Abstract |
In order to investigate views of faculty members on the decline of university students' abilities and eagerness for study, We conducted a large-scale questionnaire-type survey on 11,481 university teachers throughout Japan. The main results obtained in this survey was as follows. 1) The decline of ability was generally recognized, in particular, by the members of the private universities. 2) Lacks of fundamental ability, autonomy, and logical thinking was highly observed. Moreover, 3) it was observed that in order to study efficiently at universities, necessity to learn foreign language, Japanese language at secondary education was highly recognized, which was almost the same as the results at a survey performed to university teachers in 1992. It was also found necessary that adding to ability of logical thinking, inquiring mind, writing and conceiving ability were considered not to be acquired by students themselves, although necessity for students to acquire those ability was recognized highly by the faculty members of universities in Japan. In addition to the survey mentioned above, we also have done the survey investigating into the decline of usage of Japanese words not only in universities but also in high and middle schools. Further, we also reported a survey investigation the decline of Voluntariness to decide the topics of graduation paper by students themselves.
