Research Abstract |
Since species identification of the host larvae is important to investigate the stomach content, we have developed molecular markers to determine species of spiny lobsters, cephalopods, lantern fishes and eels. Especially, identification of squid larvae significantly contributed to stock assessment and dynamics of squid and fishes utilizing squids. Phylogenetic analysis of tuna species was performed using novel nuclear DNA. Larvae of neon squid, eel, conger eel, scyllarid lobsters and palinurid lobsters were used for molecular diet analysis. In all larvae, fungi and host variant 18S rDNA were detected, and no candidate organism as prey was found in the squid and eels. On the other hand, 18S rDNA of cnidaria and urochordata were found in two (Panulirus longipes bispinosus and P.echinatus) of three palinurid species and one (Scyllarides sp.) of two scyllarid lobster species. Fish DNA was found in the Japanese spiny lobster (P.japonicus).
