Research Abstract |
The system is composed of a computer, a wave intensity (WI) unit and an Aloka ProSound SSD-6500 ultrasonic machine (Aloka, Tokyo) equipped with a combined tissue imaging (10 or 13 MHz) and Doppler (5 MHz) transducer. The WI unit receives RF echo signals and color Doppler signals from the ultrasonic machine, and calculates the change in diameter of the artery (M-mode echo tracking) and the mean blood velocity through the sampling gate (color M-mode Doppler). The system was completed in 2004. However, some problems in the software were found, and it took more than 1 year to fix them. We measured local pulse wave velocity (PWV) in the carotid artery in more than 150 normal subjects and patients with hypertension or other cardiovascular disease. We also measured Cardio Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI) with Vasera VS- 1000, which is one of the indices of mean arterial PWV obtained with a two-point measurement system, and compared the data with carotid arterial PWV obtained with our system. Carotid arterial PWV did not correlate with CAVI, which suggests that the progress in the arterial stiffness is not uniform and the analysis of local arterial stiffness with our system is useful for investigating the progress in regional arteriosclerosis. Our system can also obtain wave intensity indices at the same time. Wave intensity is a new index of the working condition of the heart interacting with arterial system. We studied the differences in the cold pressor response between patients with hypertension and normal subjects and reported the results at the congress in Europe (9^<th> Annual Meeting of the European Association of Echocardiography (Florence, 2005),
