Research Abstract |
In order to examine the effect of eccentric-contraction exercise on skeletal muscle, rats were suspended from their tail for two weeks (group S), followed by they ran on a horizontal treadmill (60 min per day) for five days (group H ; low eccentric-contraction group) or a downhill treadmill (group D ; high eccentric-contraction group) or no running (group C ; control). Cross-section area of the soleus muscle was 1822.5±311.76μm^2 in group H,1731.3±164.06μm^2 in group D,2120.4±554.34μm^2 in group C and 1619.6±297.91μm^2 in group S, respectively. Number of the muscle fiber for cross-section area of 0.24 m^2 was 83.5±8.23 in group H,73.8±9.91 in group D,73.0±17.05 in group C and 84.3±10.50 in group S, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the cross-section area and number of the muscle fiber in each group. Number of peripheral nucleus in the muscle was 1.8±0.26 in group H,1.8±0.30 in group D,2.5±0.28 in group C and 1.7±0.29 in group S, respectively. The number significantly increased in the group C (p<0.05). These results suggested that recovery of the muscle might be delayed in both of low and high eccentric-contraction exercise groups.
