Research Abstract |
The recent revolution of the social care insurance system has placed emphasis on finding ways to give support so that persons requiring care will be able to develop coping skills to the best of their own ability in achieving independence to carry out their daily living. Compared with total physical care, there is a greater need for support at home in daily living. However, current evaluations in the field of caregiving are not very favorable for the lifestyle support offered by professional care workers. One reason for this poor appraisal could lie in the current program of study in home economic courses at schools training professional caregivers, notably the lack of specialization for practical application in actual situations of caregiving. This study carried out research in the following four areas : 1) An observational survey of home helpers and professional caregivers involved in home care, with a consideration of the relationship between home economics course content and the actual work. 2) Prior to the students' practicum, the information obtained in 1) above was incorporated into a class on support for daily living and presented. The students were surveyed in order to ascertain their concerns and degree of accomplishment, thus enabling a grasp of the effectiveness of the prepracticum learning session. 3) As knowledge of actual case studies proved important for daily living support, a survey of such cases in the literature was carried out. 4) To determine the effectiveness of the home economics course content in preparing students for actual care practice, a survey was conducted among the graduates of this institution. Results of the study clarified the following points : 1) The observational survey of actual home care made clear the necessity to include areas of study currently not covered in the home economics program. These include such topics as a wide range of knowledge for understanding the user, manners, and consideration of needs as well as skills related to caregiving and other subjects. This survey also reconfirmed the necessity for instructors in the home economics program to keep abreast of developments and issues involved in actual caregiving. 2) It became apparent that lessons involving role-play were effective for students to visualize actual practice as they have limited personal experience in daily living. 3) There is not very much in the literature that presents case studies of support for daily living. 4) Approximately 50% of the graduates responded that the majority of the current contents of the home economic program were applicable in actual practice. From the above, it is clear that, in order to train professional caregivers who can provide support for independent living, there is a need to implement classes in the home economics program that feature practical content based on actual practice as well as effective instruction.
