Research Abstract |
There are two aims of this study : Firstly, it is to throw light on gender that appears in modern Chinese culture such as literature, theater arts, and films. Secondly, it is to examine the common concept of gender of Chinese people that lie at the base of their culture through its history. We held twenty-two study meetings in total with this theme, since April 2003 to March 2006, and average number of participants was fourteen to fifteen. On March 7^<th>, 2004, to host an International Symposium "a representation of gender in Chinese dramatic art", we invited Mrs. Yang Xiaoqing, Director of Yue opera, dramas played exclusively by women, and Mr.Li Jide, a leading figure of Chinese Playwrights Association and Vise President of "Chinese Dramatic arts" magazine, from China as panels. nd also discussed about a representation of gender. On June 25^<th> and 26^<th>, we threw another International symposium "Elements of muscularity and feminality in Yue opera and Takarazuka". From Takarazuka opera company, producer Mr.Akira Kusano, and male role actor Ms.Chihiro Isono, female role actor Ms.Kei Ichihara took part. From Yue opera side, Producer Mrs.Yang Xiaoqing, Male role actor of Hangzhou Yue opera School Ms.Chen Xueping, and Female role actor of Hangzhou Yue opera School Ms.Zhou Yujun joined to have a productive discussion and also to make performance on stage. This symposium was opened to public and accepted very well. The study team also edited and published "An Introduction to Chinese Women's History : The Past and Present of Women in China", a guide book to inquire into gender in China historically from Jinbun Shoin in March, 2005. This title deals with the history of women in China under eight sub-themes : marriage, education, female movement, labor, body, literature, hierarchy, and belief.
