Research Abstract |
In my paper entitled "Georg Buchner's ideological standpoint in his first drama Danton's Death" I tried to determine properly the position of this german revolutionary dramatist in ideological flows of 19th century Europe. So far two-way choice is dominant in Buchner research : Many researchers define him as materialist and atheist oweing his conviction to french encyclopedists, while other reseachers consider him a late-born jacobin of the idealistic tradition since Rousseau. Through comparative research between Buchner's dramas and various phiolosohic works by Rousseau and Fichte on the one hand and of Holbach, Diderot and Elvetius on the other, I came to the conclusion in this paper that these two opposing lines of thought were struggling with each other especially in his first drama, yet without ever experiencing triumph. rch on "Lenz", Buchners only prose piece, has been investigated full-dress in Germany and the accomplishments have lately appeared in the fifth volume of the complete works of Buchner published by the Georg Buchner Institution in Marburg. But there are lots of problems in the text research of this volume. Not only are some parts of the text arbitrarily read, but the influences of the french psychiatry on Buchner are also overestimated so that this novel is distorted as ciritical study on the contemporary german psychiatry. My paper titled "Seeing through the positivistic bush - how to read the "Lenz" published by the institution in Marburg" which came out in the latest issue of the "Meridian", the annuals of the Georg Buchner Society of Japan, criticized the method and intention of the Georg Buchner Institution. This paper beginning now through the good offices of an italian Buchner researcher, to be read by European colleagues. Though there is little reference to my proper subject "research on the creative process of Buchner's works", it was very useful for me to have participated in the International Buchner Symposium 2004 in the USA. The paper I have read on this symposium about "the Buchner reception in the literature and German philology in Japan" is to appear in the book "Georg Buchner International Symposium 2004 in Nashiville" published by Vanderbilt University and the Georg Buchner Institution.
