Research Abstract |
The main theme of the project is the study of the changes in the representation of women in the Irish Literature from the Middle ages to the present day with the view to the historical, social and political background. To that goal, I make an emphasis on studying the so far less known Irish women poets, play wrights, and novelists and, furthermore, on taking up the so far unfamiliar writings to the Japanese readers because of their media, i.e. Irish language. For that purpose, I spent an enormous amount of time learning the language. The result of which is the completion of the, translation into Japanese of Micheal O Siadhail's Learning Irish, an intermediate grammar book, with the other members of Kyoto Irish Language Study Group. Moreover, in the two articles on the elegies of Maira Mhac an tSaoi I could have the point of view of the Irish literary tradition going back to the 18^<th> century. On the other hand, my article on Liam O'Flaherty's novels is not enough to give the big change in the representation of women after the Literary Revival at the beginning of the 20^<th> century its due attention. I am at present writing an article entitled The Representation of Women in Liam O'Flaherty's Novels' to make a further research on the illusions of men and the reality of women and how the representation of women is changed after Irish independence.
