Research Abstract |
The major research findings gained through this study include the following : (1)Grammaticalization patterns between Japanese and Korean : Both languages belong to the same morphological type (agglutinating languages) and grammaticalization patterns exhibit similarities. However, under closer scrutiny, the two languages exhibit subtle differences (Horie 2003, Ishihara, Horie, and Pardeshi, in press). (2)Polyfunctionality phenomena observed in Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese : Polyfunctionality is a commonly observed phenomenon in East and South East Asian languages (Yap, Matthews, and Horie 2004). Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese commonly manifest a grammaticalization phenomenon of transitive marking, which shows polyfunctionality and is subject to varying interpretations contextually (Horie and Murakami, in press). (3)Subjectification phenomena in the grammaticalized constructions in Japanese : Japanese exhibits a semantic-pragmatic change known as "subjectification" (Traugott 2003) in its grammaticalized constructions (Horie and Shimura 2003, Horie and Kondo 2004).
