Research Abstract |
1,In this study, the stratification model of language formation-a new approach to the study of geolinguistics-is proposed. The paper illustrates that, using the concept of the "Monsoon Asia Cultural Sphere" as a substratum, the long and complex history of many East Asian languages can be better explained : for instance, it can be assumed that the Korean language is made up of two different strata, the Monsoon Asia substratum and the Altai superstratum ; the Japanese language, in contrast, may have derived from three different layers, the Monsoon Asia substratum, the Austronesia as the intercalary stratum, and the Altai superstratum. After arguing theoretical merits of this new approach, the paper concludes by calling for further research from the stratificational viewpoint. 2,In connection with the problem of the overlapping of various Japanese dialects, the distribution of terms for 'rivercourses' and the borderline between dialects that cuts across the Kanto region are taken up, and the necessity is pointed out of taking into account, when considering the factors that have given rise to this borderline between dialects, the special linguistic features of 'Monsoon Asia' which formed the original background of archaic Japanese. 3,The distribution of some words and the anthropology-phenomenon in the area of Monsoon Asia was shown. With that, the necessity of the researches into Monsoon Asian cultural sphere was discussed. That is, the large distribution of the word which means swamp ^*nub was shown here, in addition to ^*nahdi and ^*sungwa which are the example of a distribution of the name of the river in a climate region called Monsoon Asia taken up until now. By this, the possibility of a substratum of old language in the Monsoon Asia cultural sphere increased more. Moreover, it was pointed out also that there is two type sound correspondence as 'b-m', 'k・x-p・f', in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Ainu language in east Asia.
