Research Abstract |
A series of the historiographical works accomplished in the abbey of Saint-Denis in the Middle Ages is well-known. But at the same time, as Bernard de Clairvaux said "Vulcan's atelier", many false documents and fishy stories were fabricated in the work. It seems to cause some misunderstandings in the research on them. I examined the Descriptio and the false charter of Charlemagne. The relics of the Passion (the crown of thorns and the nail) described in the Descriptio have been believed to have relation to the origin of the Lendit. And one has argued frequently Suger's writings as evidence. "Indictum exterius in platea, interius enim sanctorum erat, libentissime reddidit" (Suger, Vita Ludovici) should be translated into "He gave back generously the outer Lendit in the fields, because the ceremony in the basilica had been hold for Saints for a long time." In short, Suger intentionally or not takes Indictum ambiguously. The charter of Charlemagne (DK 286) has been argued as a false document fabricated in the 12^<th> Century. Then, one has been led to many misunderstandings, and the argument has come to a deadlock. We have to remember that this document had appeared for the first time in Jacques Doublet's book (1625) as Elizabeth Brown noticed in 1992. In a word, this false charter was fabricated by J.Doublet or his contemporaries. And then, this difficult problem on DK 286 dissolves in an instant.
