Research Abstract |
There are a lot of folk performing arts In Southern Kyushu, Satsunan Islands and Amami Islands. They are located between Okinawa (Ryukyu) and Yamato (which means Japan except Amami and Okinawa), so, many of those performing arts were influenced by Okinawa culture and Yamato culture historically. They can be called Ryukyu Performing Arts and Yamato Performing Arts. It is said that there are 2 folk cultural boundaries in these regions, one is between Satsunan Islands and the Amamioshima Island and the other is between the Tokunoshima Island and the Okinoerabujima Island, so, they divide into 3 folk cultural territories. Ryukyu Performing Arts and Yamato Performing Arts in these regions divide into 3 regional categories according to 3 folk cultural territories. In Southern Kyushu and Satsunan Islands there are many Ryukyu Performing Arts in which people represent Ryukyu images consciously. In the Amamioshima Island, the Tokunoshima Island and the Kikaijima Island there are many Ryukyu Performing Arts, and there are many Yamato Performing Arts too, and they are mixed. In the Okinoerabujima Island and the Yoron Island there are many Yamato Performing Arts in which people represent Yamato images consciously. But we can find some differences in each territory by a careful comparison. For example, in Ryukyu Performing Arts of the Satsunan Islands people represent Ryukyu images more consciously and strangely than in those of Southern Kyushu. People in the Tokunoshima Island and the Kikaijima Island represent different kind of Yamato images which people in the Amamioshima Island do not represent. It shows that it is not enough to understand the folk culture in Southern Kyushu, Satsunan Islands and Amami Islands according to 3 regional categories. These regions should be regarded as an assembly of each island and region in which originality was formed by interplay of cultural exchange and stay historically.
