Research Abstract |
Before going to the field in Cameroon, and after coming back from the field, I tried to write downwhat I recorded in the field. After the writing down the recorded materials, I compared the motifs, and types of the folktales. At the same time, I tried to collect all the already published books and articles, and read them. There are many unsolved problems. The more I carried out the research, the more need I felt the importance of working among the local people. For there is a lack of firsthand informatio. There are almost no great materials on the Mandara folktales except "Die Mafa" by Godula Kosack(2001). However, her material does nolt contain any texts either in Mofa or in Fulfulde. Thus, right from the beginning I thought the most important thing to do is the preparation of perfect text in Fulfulde and Mandara languages. I was able to prepare texts in Koine Fulfulde and Mofa. There are 219 stories obtained. For the convenience of the further study, I added the resume in English. Although I made a comparison between 219 Mofa stories and almost two thousand Fulbe folktales of northern Cameroon, there are very little similarities except some borrowed stories in Mofa from the Fulbe. This means that they are untouched by the Islamized Fulbe, and even if they live side by side with the Fulbe, they did not get a great influence from the Fulfulde speaking people. Besides folktales in Koine Fulfulde, I collected the personal histories of these people, and studied the material culture of these people. As soon as I can complete the whole manuscripts, I will publish it as one of the National Museum Reports.
