Research Abstract

In this project, novel technique of nano-sized thin film coating on the surface of nano-porous semiconductor electrode was developed. We have achieved new preparation method for ZnO/SnO2 composite electrode using doctor-blade coating technique that have good reproduceability compared with conventional spray coating. The dye-sensitized solar cell with this zinc oxide/tin oxide composite electrode afforded relatively high photoenergy conversion efficiency.
1.Nano-sized thin film coating on the surface of nano-porous semiconductor electrode : ZnO powder and 15% SnO2 colloidal solution were ground in mortar. Acetic acid, acetyl acetone and triton-X100 were dropped into the mixture in mortar. Then, H2O and cellulosic thickener were added to the mixture and the mixture was thoroughly ground. Resulting dispersion paste was spread onto CTO glass substrate with glass rod and dried under air. Dried film was sintered in every accumulation process. Almost perfect film could be prepared. Using eosin … More Y as a dye sensitizer, two layered SnO2-ZnO composite film afforded the best efficiency (2.2 %), which is comparable to the film prepared by conventional spray method.
2.Preparation of nano-porous composite oxide semiconductor electrodes made from various combination of oxide semiconductor particle : We have applied newly developed doctor-blade technique for the accumulation of zinc oxide/tin oxide composite electrode to the preparation of various combination of multi layered nano-porous oxide semiconductor electrode. Tin oxide electrode have been regarded as an inadequate electrode material for dye-sensitized solar cells because the solar cell made with tin oxide electrode showed only poor solar cell performance. However, we have found that tin oxide electorode could afford relatively high photoenergy conversion efficiency when the electode was accumulated with zinc oxide/tin oxide composite electrode. The amount of eosin Y dye adsorption onto the tin oxide electorde was remarkably increased when tin oxide electrode was dipped in the dye-ethanol solution in the presence of zinc acetate.
3.Improvement of dye-sensitized solar cell made with nano-porous tin oxide electrode (The effect of salt additives on dye adsorption to the electrode) : The effect of salt additive in dye solution was found to improve solar cell performances especially open circuit voltage (Voc). The effects of these salt additives could be explained that the organic anion of zinc salt adsorbs on the surface of nano-porous tin oxide electrode and suppresses charge recombination. Less
