Research Abstract |
Wave splash patterns on block mound seawalls were examined for coastal highways based on hydraulic model tests. The projecting angle and initial speed of wave splash were formulated for typical wave and structural conditions, and their applicability was confirmed by field observation. Traffic hindrances caused by high waves on coastal highways in Hokkaido were also investigated, and it was shown that a running vehicle was damaged under the wave overtopping rate that is specified as the limit for safe passage. High mound composite type seawall has a new type of structure, with a wave-dissipating function added to the upright section that mitigates the impact force of waves breaking on the high mound. In addition, the relatively shallow area around the mound can be expected to serve as a submarine forest. Experimental studies were carried out on the hydraulic characteristics of the high mound composite type seawall. At Mori Port, a local port on Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido, this structure was constructed as seawalls to mitigate the shortage of mooring facilities. Design procedures of wave splash barrier for coastal highway were discussed based on the field data obtained at Route 336 of Erimo town in Hokkaido. The necessary height of splash barrier can be calculated by wave splash height considering wave and structural conditions. As for wave forces, conventional formula cannot be used because of the impact wave force. According to the series of wave force test results, the modification factor to Goda's Formula was newly introduced.
