Research Abstract |
To elucidate the biodiversity in Osmundaceae, two directions of biological analysis were designed, i.e. (1) establishment of natural system of classification based on phylogenetic researches, and (2) complement of monographic revision for Species Plantarum, based on research in speciation. (1) Natural system of classification. A new system of 4 genera and 6 subgenera is proposed, based on the research on molecular phylogeny and cooperative anatomy. Osmundastrum is treated as a monotypic genus, although the second species, O. claytoniana, was usually included in it. Osumunda claytoniana, is then treated as to form a monotypic subgenus under the genus Osmunda, for this subgenus, a new name, Claytosmuda, is proposed with a new description. (2) Monographic revision. Osmundaceae is widely distributed throughout the world. Based on the herbarium materials and field surveys in some important localities, monographic revision is compiled. All the 17 species of this family are classified as : 1 in Osmundastrum, 2 in Todea, 6 in Leptopteris, and 8 in Osmunda, 1 in subgen, Claytosumunda, 3 in subgen. Osmunda, and 4 in subgen. Plenasium. The keys to genera, to subgenera, and to species are prepared. All the taxa are enumerated each with proper synonymy and brief description. This monograph will be published as a part of Species Plantarum, or the Flora of the World. (3) Analysis on speciation. Osmunda X intermedia is inferred as originated from hybridization between O. japonica and O. lancea. This is recognized by the evidences in cytogenetics, and molecular analysis of these complex was made to understand the relationship among them.
