Research Abstract

It has been reported that dogs show allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis to vaccines. We analyzed allergens that have caused reactions to vaccines and found that fetal calf serum(FCS) in vaccines induces the allergic reactions to vaccines among dogs.
In the present study, we analyzed allergens in FCS that cause allergic reactions to vaccines. We used the immunoblotting method to analyze the sera of dogs that exhibited allergic reactions. From this immunoblotting analysis, a strong band was detected near 68 kDa and a weak band was detected near 75 kDa. Furthermore, we confirmed that IgE in these sera reacted to purified BSA in the immunoblotting method. These results suggest that BSA might be one of the allergens that exist in FCS.
It has been reported that many dogs suffer from food allergy to beef and that some dogs show allergic reactions at the time of first vaccination. We believe it is possible that dogs showing beef allergy may have sensitivity to some allergens in FCS before vaccination. In the immunoblotting method using the sera of the dogs with beef allergy, a positive band was detected near 67 kDa and 55 kDa. Furthermore, with the immunoblotting using purified proteins, we found that the 67 kDa band was BSA and the 55-kDa band was bovine gamma-globulin(BGG).
We were able to identify that BSA and BGG are allergens that cause beef allergy among dogs. A large amount of BSA and BGG is contained in vaccines for the dogs. These results suggest that there is some relationship between allergic reactions at the vaccination and beef allergy in dogs.
