Research Abstract |
Recently, many studies were performed to There has recently been exhaled breath condensate is an non-invasive method to The breath condensates can be collected easily from patients without any invasion, and repeated collection from the same patients is possible. These features seem to fit for screening test or for management of patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical utility in diagnosis and management of patients with lung cancer. Breath condensates were collected from 23 patients with lung cancer and 10 healthy volunteers. We tried to measure tumor makers, inflammatory and fibrotic cytokines and prostanoids. As for tumor markers, we tried to measure CEA, SLX, CA 19-9, CYFRA, ProGRP, and NSE in five samples for each tumor marker from patients with high serum values. However, none of those tumor markers could be detected in those breath condensates. Moreover, cytokines : IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8 and TGF-beta were also not detected in the tested samples. We could detect prostanoids : PGE2 and LTB4 in several samples. But, the amounts were within the lowest range of detectable amount, and the measurements were neither reliable nor reproducible. We conclude that detection of high molecular weight substances such as tumor markers and cytokines in breath condensates were difficult. The detection of lower molecular weight substances such as prostanoids might be possible. However, more sensitive detection method or further concentration of breath condensates might be necessary for reliable results.
