Research Abstract |
We investigated if low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) accelerates bone formation around implants. Rats were given titanium screw (Micro PLUS, Leibinger, Germany) implanted in their bilateral tibiae. LIPUS was daily administrated to right tibia, and not to left tibia as an internal control. Experiment 1 : Morphological study with a micro focus computerized tomography (micro CT) Six rats were divided into 2 groups: Three rats received LIPUS treatment for 4 days, and the others for 7 days. Then tibiae were harvested and were scanned using a micro CT (ELE SCAN, Nittetsu elex ). For morphological observation of bone formation around implants, 3D-images were constructed using image analyzing soft. Due to the halation of implants, the micro CT images were not obvious. In results, no apparent difference was observed between bilateral tibiae in either 4-days group or 7-days group. Experiment 2 : Mechanical evaluation for fixation of implant in tibiae To evaluate the mechanical stability of implant, removal torque of screw in 6 rats were measured using a torque gauge (ATG6CN, TOHNICHI) after unilateral LIPUS application for 7 days. The removal torque of screw was smaller than the insert torque in each rat, and displayed no apparent differences between bilateral tibiae. It was considered the cortical bone of tibiae was destroyed so much that screw could not be fixed in bone. In this study, the effect of LIPUS to accelerate bone formation around implants was not shown. In further study, the other animal model for implant study was needed.
