Research Abstract |
Patients with dysphagia were gradually increased, however, little is known of safety and comfortable head and body position while eating. Dysphagia may be associated many medical conditions. It is caused by any condition that affects the muscles and nerve used for swallowing. A purpose of this study was to investigate the role of autonomic nervous system in patients with inability to swallow. Ten healthy male university students (19-25 years) were measured continuously electrocardiogram and blood pressure during supine and sitting position (bed up 90 degree). Frequency domain analysis of stationary R-R interval was performed to quantify the high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF) to HF ratio (LF/HF) of heart rate variability (HRV). From supine position to sitting position systolic blood pressure (SBP) was decreased significantly, diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and LF/HF (sympathetic activity) increased. There was no significant change in parameter such as HF (parasympathetic activity). Similar changes were occurred to sitting position for bed up 45 degree. We will measure both the electromyogram for suprahyoid and autonomic nervous function same time. Insight into this effect may lead to a understanding of safety and comfortable posture with patients with dysphagia.
