Research Abstract

本研究の大きな目的のひとつは高温実験の圧力範囲をさらに高圧へ拡大するための技術開発である。従来から、ダイヤモンドアンビル装置を用いて、室温では300万気圧を超える実験が行われてきた。しかしながら、室温における実験と、レーザーで加熱する高温実験では、実験の難易度がまったく異なる。本研究では、高圧容器の工作精度やアンビルの研摩技術の向上、アンビルの形状の最適化などに取り組んできた。今年度は、ついに300万気圧・2000度以上の高温超高圧実験に成功した。また、この世界最先端の技術を活かし、SiO_2(シリカ)立方晶構造相の合成に世界ではじめて成功した。シリカは地球の地殻やマントル中に含まれるもっとも主要な酸化物であり、また工業的にも広い用途がある。それゆえ、その構造相転移は大きな関心を集めている。シリカの多形は実験的に古くから数多く知られている。また超高圧下では立方晶の構造をとることが、理論計算により1980年代から予測されていた。しかしながら予測されていた立方晶構造相への相転移圧力は約200万気圧であり、そのような超高圧下の実験はこれまでまったく行われていなかった。今回われわれは265万気圧・1800ケルビン以上において、パイライト型と呼ばれる立方晶構造相を合成した。これは、以前から知られていたどのシリカ鉱物よりも密度が大きい。この新鉱物の安定領域はすでに地球のマントルの圧力範囲(135万気圧以下)を超えており、その下は金属核であることから、地球内部には存在し得ない。しかし、シリカは太陽系全体、さらにはおそらく多くの系外惑星の主要成分であり、今回発見された立方晶構造相は天王星や海王星の中心核を形成している可能性がある。
