Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Dr. Fulco’s research was meaningful for the progress of the project“Voices of Tohoku”. Her interdisciplinary approach between humanities and social sciences was particularly successful in emphasizing the importance of individual and collective memory to build more resilient communities. She established her fieldwork in Minamisanriku (Miyagi) to follow the activities of a group of kataribe (storytellers of the disaster), and analyze the connection that they have with their community. She conducted one-to-one interviews with kataribe practitioners and other people involved in the recovery process to collect background data. Through participant observation and interviews, she attempted a classification of who they are, how they assume this role in their community and which are their preferred audiences. Analyzing the practice of kataribe identified which and whose are the stories they tell during the tours. To diffuse the partial results of her research during the fellowship she participated in several international conferences both abroad and in Japan. She was invited to conduct three lectures in Japan. She is currently working on three journal articles and one book chapter that will be soon ready for peer-review. She also started a project to explore and promote cultural practices in post-disaster areas involving photography. As part of this project she organized an exhibition at the Italian Institute of Culture in Osaka.
