| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study various Japanese learners were asked to read Japanese texts and describe in their native language what they did and did not understand. The data collected are published as the 'Corpus of the Reading Comprehension Process'. From the corpus, we found the following:
1. Learners had difficulty in recognizing letters, understanding the meaning of words and phrases, understanding the sentence structure, understanding the context etc.
2. Learners use various prediction strategies when they encounter difficulties. Sometime they work and sometimes they do not.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本語学習者の習得研究は，「話す」「書く」「聞く」「読む」の中では「話す」「書く」という産出面の研究に偏っている。「聞く」「読む」という受容面の研究は，「話す」「書く」という産出面に比べると，大きく遅れている。
本研究は，研究が遅れている受容面の「聞く」「読む」のうち「読む」に焦点を当て，日本語学習者の読解過程を調査し，そのデータを読解コーパスとして公開し，読解過程をさまざまな角度から分析するものである。その成果を応用すれば，有用な読解教材が作れるようになる。
