| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Gengo, or Japanese era names had been derived from the phrases of Chinese classics. Few scholars have paid attention to these quoted Chinese books and the academic value of the process of deciding the new Gengos. This project deal with the documents presented by scholars before the conference to decide the new Gengo and the debates by high officials on the proposed Gengos. On the former written the phrases derived from Chinese classics, which often reflected the text of old manuscripts, in the latter can be observed the words related to Chinese classics. Many of these cannot be seen in the other type of academic writings or documents. Two books are the fruits of our research project, which are "Rare Chinese Classical Study Materials Preserved in Japan, the Part of Japanese Era" and "Era Names and East Asia : Thought and Culture Establishing New Era Names".

日本には漢籍の古刊本や古写本が多く残っており、これらに対する研究は、「域外漢籍」、すなわち中国から見て国外に存する漢籍類に対する研究の主要部分を占める。「域外漢籍」は、中国学の中でも国際的に注目されている領域であり、新たな研究資料の開拓が求められている。本研究を通して、国内の年号関係資料には、漢籍の古いテキストはもとより、中国で失われた漢籍の文章、さらには現存の諸文献には全く見えない文章まで含まれていて、「域外漢籍」研究の発展に貢献できる資料群であることが明らかとなった。研究活動を通して得られた知見をもとに編集・刊行した書物２種は、今後の年号研究の基本文献とない得るものである。
