| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Through our joint research, we have shown that Romantic environmental literature and thought emerged in Britain and the U.S. as a result of their bilateral philosophical and literary dialogues, rather than the predominantly unilateral influence of British thought on the U.S. Another major finding is that environmental literature identifying today's ambient contamination, which continues to spread and transcend all boundaries of gender, race, and nationality--what Scott Slovic calls “non-locality”--has its literary and historical origin in this lively exchange of Romantic environmental ideas on both sides of the Atlantic. Through our project, we have determined that environmental literature and thought in the Romantic age are one of the most crucial and essential contributions to English and American culture and to today's world in general.

英米ロマン主義の環境文学・思想の相互影響作用に注目するという独創的な視点をとり、個別実証的研究にとどまらず、環境文学批評史におけるロマン主義の「トランスアトランティック・エコロジー」研究の体系化に先鞭をつけた本研究は、エコクリティシズムのさらなる発展に貢献する成果をあげた点に、学術的意義がある。さらに、本科研のホームページでの研究成果の公表、一般向けの講座の開催、本の出版など、現在の環境保護意識向上に関して啓蒙活動の一環を担った点で、社会的にも重要な意義を持つ。
