| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examines the impacts and the causes of legislative turnover rate in countries with the electoral rule of single member district and two-party system, comparing with the Japanese case. It found that high legislative turnover is caused with weak local party organization and that party politics in Canada and Japan has lots of similarities in terms of local party organization and its impact of legislators’ behavior.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
日本の政治改革ではイギリス型の二大政党制が目指されていたと思われるが、日本の選挙制度改革によってもたらされたのは、カナダ型、激変型の二大政党制であった。後者の二大政党制は、弱い政党地方組織を特徴とするものであり、本研究は、カナダの政党政治と日本の政党政治に従来あまり注目されることのなかった類似性が存在することを明らかにし、それを通じて今後日本や各国の政党政治を捉える上での新たな視角を提起した。
