Outline of Final Research Achievements

Size-polarity matrix analysis of biopolymer revealed that EPS of 70-200kDa size caused irreversible fouling in the interior of MF membrane. Vanillin, a quorum sensing inhibitant, could mitigate membrane fouling in MBR remarkably by reducing this size of EPS. Autoinducer anlaysis by FTMS revealed that activated sludge had diverse AHL species.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

膜ろ過を用いた下水処理プロセスは，水資源保全のための水再利用や，河川上下流での間接飲用再利用における再生水の水質向上に重要であるが，膜ファウリング（いわゆる目詰まり）の洗浄に伴うエネルギー消費と運転コストの削減が国内での普及促進の課題の一つである。本研究では，膜ファウリングの原因となるバイオポリマーの特徴を明らかにするとともに，微生物阻害剤であるバニリンを添加することで，膜ファウリングの進行を顕著に抑制できること，そのメカニズムを明らかにした。このメカニズムを応用することで，膜ろ過を用いた下水処理プロセスにおけるエネルギー消費と運転コストの大幅な削減が期待できる。
