Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the present study, we focused on the "Effect of interaction between metabolic flux and epigenetic modification on metabolic disease". In the line of results suggests that metabolic flow from gut microbiota may affect host one-carbon metabolism which is one of the main sources of methyl donor for the epigenetic regulation. In another line of evidence showed that ketone body metabolism (flux) regulates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cell line and functional regulation of intestinal epithelial cells.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

わが国の低出生体重児（出生体重2500g未満）の出生割合はこの35年で約2倍に増加し、2016年には全体の10.6%とOECD加盟国で最多となっている。この背景には、女性(20歳から39歳)の20%がBMI18.5以下のやせであるという現状が存在し、成人女性の栄養不良が指摘されている。エネルギー摂取不足はグルコースの代替エネルギー源であるケトン体の産生増加を促す。また、エピジェネティックな変化は世代を超えて受け継がれる。そのため、ケトン体の代謝制御機構と細胞機能・生体代謝の関連およびエピジェネティックな変化を明らかにすることは、現行世代に加え、次世代の健康管理にとって重要である。
