| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It is said that the zoo management in Japan has problems in its decision making system and the structure of revenue. The present study investigated zoo management in the United States and German-Speaking Countries by interview survey. The analysis showed that both areas were in the process of administrative change from direct management by government to non-profit organization, and their systems for decision making and fundraising were being reshaped accordingly. The study also found both these areas saw restraint on subsidies for conservation and research activities in foreign countries, which explains stagnation of comparable activities in Japanese zoos. To improve Japanese zoos, structural reform to realize serious fundraising and enhancement of animal welfare to take sides with people sensitive to happiness of animals should be important.
