Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I successfully applied a live cell imaging system to visualize the activities of the stress-activated kinases JNK and p38 simultaneously in single cells. Using this system, I discovered cell-to-cell variability of JNK activity in response to various stresses. I found regulatory mechanisms involving p38 kinase which generated the heterogeneity in JNK activity. My data indicate that the heterogeneity in JNK activity determines cell fate decisions in response to severe stresses, such as UV. Statistical analysis of p38 and JNK activity dynamics identified parameters which were predictive for cell death. The work was summarized in a paper and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. In summary, I made good progress according to the initial plans.
