Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Fostering individuals that can build mutually trusting rapport with individuals from diverse cultures is essential for respectful coexistence. Moreover, there is a tendency for identities constructed through Japanese discursive formations to avoid multicultural and multilinguistic environments. Analyzing Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto (1872-1950), who was successful as an English writer in the US, will contribute to addressing the issue. The research revealed that Sugimoto’s identity formation represented more complexly intertwined trends of thoughts from the late 19th through mid-20th centuries than initially expected. Thus, the foremost result of this research is in identifying Sugimoto as a product of a period where Geist concepts were becoming more prevalent. This led to an investigation on Geist concepts as a key factor to elucidate the identities of Sugimoto and her contemporaries, which will enhance the examination of Japanese identities today.
