Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focused Aelfric's distinctive manner in which he described the women in his homilies of virgin spouses, paying a special attention both to his usage of vocabularies and narrative methods. The process in which the Anglo-Saxon society at Aelfric's time and before had been accepting a relegious model of virgin spouses was explored. In the research, first, the present edition of Aelfric's texts were revised into a diplomatic e-texts on the basis of the extant manuscripts. Then, the Latin sources were juxtaposed to it. Finally, the Anglo-Saxon authors' attitudes towards virgin spouses were closely examined from the various aspects through comparison of the e-texts above mentioned and other works before Aelfirc which he might consulted.
