Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study empirically analyzes repair and maintenance (R&M) of production facilities embodying technologies, exploiting a unique dataset that contains production and R&M with distinguishing technologies used. We find that R&M improves productivity to some extent even for facilities embodying an old technology, and the firm continued to use and repair the old technology after its adoption of new technology. However, as the use of old technology shrinks, the rate of return of R&M decreases for facilities embodying old technology. This explains the decreasing trend of R&M for such facilities a while after the adoption of new technology.
