Outline of Final Research Achievements

First, we have examined the change in employment practices in large Japanese firms, with particular emphasis on the reduction of employees. We use firms’ financial data to examine the firms’ behavior on employment adjustment. It is shown that there is a significant change in employment reduction behavior. It is also shown that there is a significant relationship between corporate governance and employment reduction. Second, we examine the role of professionals, such as lawyers and accountants. We have examined the effect of these professional directors on performance and behavior of the firm.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本の大企業の行動を理解する上で、「企業は誰のものか」という疑問を考えることは大変重要である。日本の新聞や雑誌などでは、企業が株主価値ではなく従業員の利害を重視するように経営されてきた、とみなされていることが多い。一方で、このことに関する実証的な検証は多いとは言えない。また、この背後に、各ステークホルダーのどのようなインセンティブ構造があるのかについても実証的な検証が進んでいるとは言えない。本研究では、日本企業のコーポレートガバナンスが企業の行動・業績に与える影響について分析した。このような分析は政策を考える際にも重要であると考えられる。
